Synology NAS Data Recovery
Synology is the most popular NAS brand in UK homes and small businesses. Its DiskStation Manager (DSM) software uses Linux mdadm RAID, LVM and either Btrfs or ext4, and its Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) lets you mix drives of different sizes by creating several RAID groups behind the scenes. That flexibility makes a failed SHR volume more complex to recover than a standard RAID.

Synology Problems We Fix
- “Volume crashed” or “Storage pool crashed” in Storage Manager

Do not click Repair, Online Assemble or reinstall DSM if drives are failing – these write to the disks and can overwrite the RAID metadata we need. Power the NAS down and label each drive with its bay number.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you recover a Synology SHR volume if two drives failed?
Often, yes. We repair the failed drives, image all disks, and reassemble each hidden RAID group within the SHR volume before recovering the Btrfs or ext4 file system.
Do you need the NAS itself?
Normally we only need the drives, labelled by bay number. If you used encrypted shared folders or volume encryption, we will need your password or exported key.
