NVMe & M.2 SSD Data Recovery

NVMe drives are now the standard storage in desktops, laptops, gaming PCs and handhelds such as the Steam Deck and ROG Ally. They run hot, draw power in short bursts and are often installed on thin M.2 boards that are easy to crack. When one fails, it typically vanishes from the BIOS without warning.

We recover data from NVMe and M.2 SSDs of every generation, from early PCIe Gen3 drives to the latest Gen5 models.

Common NVMe Failures

  • Drive missing from BIOS/UEFI or Windows Disk Management
  • Blue screens with INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE or the PC stuck on the logo
  • Drive overheated and now disconnects under load
  • Cracked M.2 PCB or damaged connector after a laptop drop
  • Burnt power components after a faulty charger or PSU
  • Firmware bugs that brick the drive (several models have had known firmware issues)

Encryption

Windows 11 turns on BitLocker device encryption automatically on many new PCs. If your NVMe drive came from such a PC, we will need the BitLocker recovery key to read your files after recovery. It is usually saved in your Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey – please check before sending the drive.

What to Do Before You Send Your Device

  • Switch the device off and leave it off – every power cycle can make physical damage worse
  • Do not run CHKDSK, Disk First Aid, fsck or recovery software on a drive that clicks, beeps or is slow
  • Do not open the drive or swap the circuit board – modern boards hold drive-specific adaptive data
  • Do not reinstall the operating system or initialise the disk when prompted
  • Keep liquid-damaged devices unpowered and bring them in as quickly as possible

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you recover a Gen5 NVMe SSD?

Yes. Gen5 drives use the same controller-level approach as earlier NVMe drives; they are simply faster and run hotter. The assessment will tell us which controller your drive uses and whether a loader is available for it.
