Clicking hard drive? What it means and what to do next

A clicking, ticking or buzzing hard drive is a sign of a physical fault, and it is the situation where the first few minutes matter most. Here is what the noise usually means, and what to do, and not do, next.
What the clicking usually means
Inside a hard drive, read/write heads float a tiny distance above spinning platters. When the drive can’t read the data it expects, the heads swing back to their resting position and try again, over and over. That repeated movement is the click. Common causes include:
- Failed or damaged heads, often after a knock or a drop.
- Damaged platter surfaces, where the data itself is stored.
- A motor that is sticking or can’t spin up to speed, which can sound like buzzing or beeping instead.
- Firmware faults, where the drive can’t read its own internal service information.
What to do straight away
- Switch it off. Every time a drive with failing heads spins, it risks scratching the platters, and scratched platters can make data impossible to recover.
- Leave it off. Don’t keep plugging it back in to see if it has “come back”.
- Note what happened. Was it dropped? Did it get wet? Did the noise start suddenly or slowly? This helps the diagnosis.
What not to do
- Don’t run recovery or repair software. Software can’t fix a mechanical fault, and the long scans make physical damage worse.
- Don’t open the drive. Dust particles are larger than the gap between the heads and the platters. Drives that need opening are worked on in a cleanroom.
- Don’t freeze it, tap it or swap parts from another drive. These tips circulate online, and they turn recoverable drives into unrecoverable ones.
How we recover a clicking drive
In our London lab we diagnose the fault first. If the heads or motor have failed, the drive is opened in our cleanroom and the faulty parts are replaced with matching donor parts. We then make a complete copy of the drive with professional PC-3000 equipment and recover your files from that copy, never from the original.
The initial assessment is free, and you get a fixed, no-obligation quote before any recovery work starts. Call the lab on 020 7064 4996, or request a free assessment online.
