Why G-Technology Recovery Is Usually Very Successful

G-Technology hard drives contain Hitachi, HGST or WD drives – enterprise-class Ultrastar drives in recent desktop models – which are robust and well understood. Unlike WD My Passport and My Book drives, standard G-DRIVEs do not encrypt data on their USB or Thunderbolt board, so a failed enclosure rarely affects the data itself. The main exceptions are ArmorLock SSDs, which are hardware-encrypted and need your ArmorLock credentials, and RAID units in RAID 0, where every drive must be recovered.

Common Problems

• Drive not mounting after being knocked over or dropped on location
• Clicking or beeping G-DRIVE – usually failed heads in the internal drive
• Enclosure or power supply failure (the drive inside is often fine)
• Thunderbolt or USB-C port damaged
• “The disk you inserted was not readable” on a Mac after an unsafe eject
• Footage or projects accidentally deleted or the drive reformatted in-camera or on set

Before you send your device – five things to avoid

• Switch the device off and leave it off – every power cycle can make physical damage worse
• Do not run CHKDSK, Disk First Aid, fsck or recovery software on a drive that clicks, beeps or is slow
• Do not open the drive or swap the circuit board – modern boards hold drive-specific adaptive data
• Do not reinstall the operating system or initialise the disk when prompted
• Keep liquid-damaged devices unpowered and bring them in as quickly as possible
