Surface devices are thin, sealed and glued together, which makes them difficult to open and easy to damage further if you try. They also ship with device encryption switched on, so recovering the data takes both hardware skill and the correct recovery key.

Storage Inside a Surface

Many recent Surface models – including Surface Pro 7+ and later, Pro X, and Surface Laptop 3 and later – use a removable M.2 2230 NVMe SSD, which we can recover directly. Older models such as Surface Pro 3 to 6 and some Surface Go models have storage soldered to the board or glued in place, which requires board-level work. We assess which applies to your device free of charge.

You will need your BitLocker recovery key. Surface devices encrypt the SSD by default. The key is stored in the Microsoft account used to set up the device – visit account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey – or with your IT department for work devices. Without it, the recovered data cannot be opened.

What to Do Before You Send Your Device

  • Switch the device off and leave it off – every power cycle can make physical damage worse
  • Do not run CHKDSK, Disk First Aid, fsck or recovery software on a drive that clicks, beeps or is slow
  • Do not open the drive or swap the circuit board – modern boards hold drive-specific adaptive data
  • Do not reinstall the operating system or initialise the disk when prompted
  • Keep liquid-damaged devices unpowered and bring them in as quickly as possible
